Pen Powell Pal: Whitney Gardner!

We talk everything graphic novels!

Good evening Powells,

Ahhhh it feels good to be back as Powell.

In case you missed it, this afternoon I had a real treat when I chatted to graphic novelist Whitney Gardner, as part of my new series of videos called Pen Powell Pals!* We talked for over an hour and Whitney was kind enough to share with me where she gets her ideas, her process for writing and illustrating 200+ page graphic novels, and where she gets her inspiration.

We even got to see inside her newly published book, Free Piano, (Not Haunted), published by Simon and Schuster.

I highly recommend buying Whitney’s new graphic novel and, actually, her entire back catalogue. I personally will be purchasing a copy of Fake Blood because it sounds AWESOME.

Find Whitney on Insta: @heywhitneywrites or BlueSky: @Heywhitney. Her website is: heywhitney.com

Honestly, I had a blast.

It was a shame however, that all throughout our chat the local farmer seemed to be dumping horse manure on his fields - the smell was so potent it seeped through my cottage walls (which incidentally are nearly 30cm thick) and almost overpowered me several times. Luckily, I kept my shit together and I don’t think anyone noticed.

My NEXT Pen Powell Pal will be none other than children’s book author SIMON PHILLIP.

He has WON AWARDS and during covid he got fat and lonely (his words, not mine but I am happy to report he is now neither of those things). Simon has a brilliant Substack newsletter called Authorly Honest, a warts-and-all account of being an author.

Simon and I will be chatting at 7.30pm UK time in July…

We just haven’t actually picked a date yet. I do know it will be a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday though so, you can either wait for more info, or tune in every other day at 7.30pm until we are here. You decide.

Yours, happy to be back,

Powell x
